Mel Gets Married: I'm Engaged!

From the time that most women are little girls, they start planning (well, more like dreaming) for their wedding days. As cliché and stereotypical as this sounds, we women all know in the cockles of our hearts that this statement is true....read more...

My Health Guru Calley,

Hello, I always seem so down and have no energy. It’s hard to get out of bed in the morning. I have no time (and extra funds), for a gym. Can you recommend a few stretches or exercises that can give me a boost in the morning? Hitting the snooze button just isn’t cutting it.

Dear Frozen and Broke in Buffalo,
Yikes maybe it’s the fact that you live in Buffalo, NY.  Winters are grueling and without proper funds you cant move to the Keys, I imagine. Other than running for the shelter of your mother’s little helper… I advise; that first of all, if you can’t expose yourself to the recommended 15min of ”natural” sunshine a day, then increase your Vitamin D intake. Foods that you should incorporate are FISH!

The highest in Vitamin D are:
1.  cod liver oil (grandma knew her stuff with this torture method)
2.  Herring
3.  catfish
4.  oysters
5.  salmon
6.  trout

But if you’re like me and won’t get near this stuff try:
1.  fortified cereals (beware of the sugary ones)
2.  milk, 1% or skim
3.  soy products; in moderation though due to evidence linking soy to dementia and breast cancer, Dr. Willet says.  The jury is still out on how much soy is too much.  So try to keep it to 2 servings a day.

As far as exercise and stretches definitely start out your day by taking a nice hot shower and stretch your core, hamstrings, quads, and shoulder/neck muscles while in your own steam bath.  Fit TV does some great classes in the AM.  I enjoy their Namaste Yoga.  This will get the blood circulating the body. Energizing and warming you up for your day.  Motivate yourself to start the day with a DVD or tape with some of your faves. If all else fails make an extremely caffeinated cup of joe!!  Remember winter won’t last forever.

Love yourself,
